How adept are we to adapting ?

Ever read Spencer Johnson's 'Who moved my cheese ?' ??
I have read and re-read the book so many times and every time I read it, I find that I learn something new. Through a fantastic fable, the author has brilliantly conveyed how to embrace the inevitable changes in life.

Saying goodbye is one of the hardest things about leaving a place, especially where one has stayed long enough to easily identify his favorite local brands during grocery shopping, besides of course moving all the stuff accumulated or should I say clearing the clutter ?! I realized that although, I have moved a number of times - I don't mean just dwelling places, also from one city to another, I can never leave without shedding at least a drop of tear. It is not that I am pathetically emotional, it is just that sometimes I get used to even very little things in my daily life over a period of time which I never took note of, because my mind just took them for granted. Humans are creatures of habit. We tend to develop a routine and pattern wherever we are and this forms our comfort zone. If we are plucked out of our comfort zone, we get annoyed and frustrated. The best part, however, from my personal experience is that, the more we move, the easier it is to get over the fear or frustration and start all over again to establish routines and patterns in the new place. I guess coping with changes is not only about adapting to the new environment but adapting the environment itself.

It is not just routines and patterns, it is also the people around us who become a part of our comfort zone. These people could be our neighbors, colleagues or even an eternally grumbling boss ! I was at a farewell party organized by my colleagues at the university for myself and a co-worker who was also leaving, it was a real blast but towards the end I was bummed out completely. I realized that I will miss so many things that had become a part of the routine like the 3 'o' clock coffee breaks to name one. I am also aware that with time there will be a new routine and the 3 'o' clock coffee breaks will soon be cherished memories of the past.

Okay ! time to go and search for my copy of 'Who moved my cheese?' ...
